The term “agate” comes from the Achates River, which can be found in Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is known as chalcedony, which is a member of the quartz family, formed as a nodule inside of the volcanic rocks and/or lava. Due to being formed in these volcanic cracks and hollows, it can cause impurities, which lead to a variety of colors, including blue. Agate is found all around the world, but primarily in Brazil, India, Uruguay, Australia and the United States.
Naturally, agate stones are often “grey,” commonly found in South America; however, natural blue agate stones, referred to as a Holly Blue Agate as well as Blue Lace Agate, can naturally occur. This color is often sought after by jewelers and collectors alike since it can make captivating pieces of jewelry as well as pleasant home decor pieces. Like the many types of agate found on the market, most agates blue in color are often dyed, which is a practice known as far back as Roman times.
