Black kyanite is often referred to as the “revival stone,” and it’s a crystal mineral with very distinct characteristics.  It’s usually a dark black or dark grey and will have a unique shape that looks like a blade or a fan.

Black kyanite properties

Color:  As you may expect, black kyanite is primarily black or dark grey. The intensity of the black color can vary.

Cleavage: Black kyanite has perfect cleavage in one direction, which means it can break smoothly along certain planes.  Due to this structure and perfect cleavage, it can be quite fragile and must be handled with care.

Hardness: Its hardness varies depending on its crystallographic direction, a property known as anisotropism. It generally ranges from 4.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.  This scale refers to its scratch resistance.  The higher the number, the more resistant to scratching it will be.

Luster: Black Kyanite has a vitreous to pearly luster, meaning it has a shiny, somewhat reflective surface.

Structure: It has a blade-like crystal formation, typically flat and elongated. It can also form in splintery, columnar aggregates.

Translucency:  Most of the time, it’s typically opaque, not letting any light pass through.

Striations: The surface often exhibits longitudinal striations or grooves along the length of the crystal.

Black kyanite uses

Kyanite has been used for centuries, but references to the black variety can be hard to find in historical texts.  Today, black kyanite is used for the following purposes:

Industrial:  Kyanite is often used in manufacturing certain types of ceramics and refractory materials, such as porcelain plumbing, due to the stone’s heat resistance.  It’s also used in electronics as well as spark plugs.

Jewelry:  It’s very popular in jewelry, often used in ornamental carvings, rings and bracelets.  It’s a unique crystal structure that can give off an attractive appearance when cut and polished.

Healing:  As noted above, black kyanite has a variety of metaphysical properties.  It’s believed to be a grounding stone that helps to balance the body’s energy.
