Blue obsidian is a rock that looks a lot like glass, with a rich blue hue that catches your eye. Picture it as the lesser-known sibling of the classic black obsidian.  This gemstone is pretty unique, mainly because it’s not easy to come by. It forms under just the right conditions and needs a perfect mix of elements to come to life.

The shades of aqua blue can range from the calm hues of a pond to vibrant, energetic tones. It’s a stone that catches your eye and sparks your imagination in a way that’s different from its black or green counterparts.

This volcanic rock is packed with silica, giving it that glassy appearance.  When lava cools off quickly, in places where there’s not much water but lots of silica, it forms into what you see today.  It’s a lot like a cousin to rhyolite in terms of its chemical makeup if you’re familiar with this stone.

Again, it’s a bit of a rare find in its natural state, so don’t be surprised if you come across many man-made versions out there.

In today’s guide, let’s explore the meaning of blue obsidian as well as answers to questions you may have.

This stone is said to be like a beacon of positivity, helping them find balance. It’s great for absorbing pessimism, encouraging Pisceans to look within, find peace, and understand that every experience, good or bad, has something valuable to offer.

Is blue obsidian real?

Yes!  Blue obsidian is 100% real.

It shares its origins with the other obsidian varieties, all of which are born from the intense heat of volcanoes. While black obsidian feels full of dark, deep energy, the blue version has a softer touch. Don’t be fooled, however, as it’s still said to be mighty when it comes to getting rid of negative vibes if we’re thinking metaphysically. The blue tint in this volcanic glass is super rare. It’s all thanks to trapped gas bubbles that are present during the cooling process. Iron and magnesium usually give obsidian its darker shades, but it’s these bubbles that create the blue color. Because of its rarity, blue obsidian is often created artificially.

How to tell if blue obsidian is real

Determining if blue obsidian is real can be challenging, especially given the rarity of naturally occurring blue obsidian and the prevalence of man-made versions. However, there are a few methods you can use to help:

  • Look and Feel: Genuine obsidian has a glass-like appearance and texture. It should feel smooth and glassy to the touch. In particular, blue obsidian should have a uniform blue color when looked at up close. If it appears too perfect or uniform, it might be artificially made.
  • Check for Bubbles: Natural obsidian, formed from rapidly cooling lava, may contain tiny air bubbles. However, if the bubbles are too uniform in size and distribution, it could indicate that the stone is man-made, as natural formation usually results in more random bubble patterns.
  • Scratch Test: Obsidian is relatively hard, about a 5-6 on the Mohs scale, and should be able to scratch glass or a similarly softer material. However, be cautious with this test as it can damage the stone.
  • Translucency Test: Hold the stone up to a light. Genuine obsidian will typically show some translucency on its thin edges, revealing its glassy nature.
  • Temperature Test: Obsidian tends to feel naturally cool to the touch, more so than artificial glass.

Where is blue obsidian found?

The way blue obsidian is formed is a story in itself.

Regular obsidian comes into being when volcanic lava rich in silica cools super quickly – so fast that crystals don’t even have time to form. The deep black color we usually see comes from high levels of iron and magnesium. Blue obsidian, however, is thought to form in a slightly different way. Geologists believe that trapped gas bubbles during the cooling process might be the secret behind its unique blue color.

The majority of blue obsidian available in the market is often man-made due to its rarity in nature. However, there are a few locations where natural Blue Obsidian has been found.

Most sources include certain parts of Greece and the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.  Deposits do exist, but as noted, these sources are often depleted quickly due to demand.

Blue obsidian price

Natural blue obsidian, as noted, is a rare find. Whenever it’s discovered, it doesn’t take long for the supply to run out. That’s why true blue obsidian is pretty expensive and highly sought after by both healers and collectors. There are imitation versions out there, made from man-made glass or as a result of special smelting processes, but they don’t hold a candle to the real thing in terms of value.

The price of blue obsidian can vary, especially depending on whether it’s natural or man-made. For a palm-sized or smaller piece of natural chunk, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $75. The cost depends on the rarity and unique properties of the stone.

Man-made forms, such as cobalt blue obsidian and Siberian blue obsidian, are generally more affordable. A decent-sized piece can cost about $25.  Remember that these are just estimates.

Cleansing your blue obsidian

Despite looking like glass, blue obsidian isn’t a self-cleaning stone. It needs regular care to maintain its energy just like any healing stone.  Frequently, it requires cleansing and recharging from time to time.

You have several options to keep your blue obsidian clean and charged:

  • On a full moon night, leave it outside and then retrieve it in the morning.
  • Bury your crystal in your garden for up to two days.
  • Meditate with it to purify both the stone and yourself.
  • Let it soak in seawater for up to 24 hours.
  • Place it on a bed of Himalayan salt for 24 hours.
  • Smudging herbs, such as sage, can be used to cleanse it. Just hold the intention of purification in your mind as you do so.

Remember, taking care of your crystals ensures that it’s always ready to help you on your healing journey.
